every summer, our church hosts a number of college students who are living and working as a part of campus outreach. they are away from home during their summer break, flipping burgers by day and training to spread the word of God by night. some of my first memories of our church include hanging out with the campus outreach students before brian and i were even dating. (that's when we were college students. now we're just old!) to encourage these young men and women, families from our church adopt students and provide times of fellowship together... whether that be an outing with the family on the boat or coming over for lunch after church on sunday, the adopted families are just supposed to reach out.
jeff and kristie and brian and i jointly adopted four of these college students this summer. it was one of those things that we have never done, that we have watched other families do, and i just felt really convicted that it was our turn. hospitality is not one of my specialities, but it's an area in which i truly desire to grow. so i thought this would be a good baby step... college students don't have their own homes, so they wouldn't care if mine wasn't in tip-top shape. college students living in a hotel for the summer will just be happy to be in a home, even in the kitchen cabinets are only half painted. so i presented my idea to brian, and he was pretty hesitant at first. my sweet husband is very cautious of jumping into commitments, and even more so, he is very cautious about me jumping into commitments. he knows i love to fill my plate full to overflowing, and he knows it is not pretty when that plate comes crashing down. and the plate usually hits him on the head on the way down! but this girl drives a hard bargain, and in the end, i convinced him that it would be good for us to step out of our comfort zone and host these students. kristie offered to join in with us, and that really sealed the deal for brian. SO the four of us adopted four students: allison, bryce, caroline, and micah. and we were so glad that we did.
since we don't have a family boat, we opted for the sunday-lunch-after-church route. :) we were able to have them over several times during the two months they were with us, and kristie and i shared the hostessing responsibilities. brian's parents also adopted two students, so we all went over to their house one week for a big dinner. i loved getting to know these guys. every sunday, we hugged their necks at church and asked how their weeks were going. over lunch, they filled us in on different opportunities they had to minister to people at work and how their discipleship training was going. we learned about their families (micah is one of 13 kids!), and we talked about their college life (bryce played football where my friend ashley's brother was on staff! small world!). ethan, caroline, and karina thrilled on having a captive audience for their antics, and amelia only peed on allison once! we shared funny stories about the kids, and they definitely got a taste of how not to get three small children to sit at a table and eat lunch! most importantly, we listened as they shared about how God has worked in their lives... about how they have tasted first-hand the mighty grace of God. we had to remind ourselves each week that we are at least a decade older than these students! they were so mature and were so willing to help out in any way. they were so loving and sweet to our kids, and they were so appreciative of us having them in our homes. and they didn't complain when we sent them home with leftovers, either! :) we were so completely blessed by getting to know these students. isn't that the way it always goes? you reach out to bless someone, and you are the one who is blessed even more in return!
these pictures are from last sunday, which was our last sunday with them. jeff & kristie were out of town, and micah had an party to attend for his work. i was bummed that we didn't get a picture with everybody, but you know i had to at least take a picture of some of us!!

we were so sad to say good-bye, but i know these guys were looking forward to a few weeks at home before gearing back up for another fall semester. thanks to facebook, we hope to keep in touch, and who knows!? maybe they'll be back down again next year. they will always have a special place in our hearts as our first college students! (that's right, brian's already given me the "ok" to adopt students next summer!) :) we are praying that allison, caroline, micah, and bryce will have a blessed school year as they sow seeds for the Kingdom! God bless you guys!
