o christmas tree...

ethan has surprised us this christmas by taking very good care of our christmas tree! i don't mean watering it and trimming the branches (ha--now that would really be a surprise!)... i really imagined him wanting to pull off every ornament within reach. he does touch them but has (until today) followed my instructions to "just touch" the pretty balls. he can name some of the ornaments (baby, bear, hat--a snowman w/ a hat on it), and every morning, he runs into the living room exclaiming, "on! on!" for me to turn on the lights. he really does love the tree! so we're glad that we didn't have to put the tree in the pack-n-play for its own protection. :)

today, i caught him investigating the strange boxes with paper on them under the tree... they've been there for a few days, and he didn't notice them until he saw me adding to the pile. i'm so glad i captured this child-like moment on camera... too bad he's just in play clothes! (i know....quit being a perfectionist and enjoy your children, emily!) the good news is that my mom has photoshop elements, and she thinks she can change the color of his shirt... but that will have to wait till after christmas, and i'm too impatient to put off posting these shots till then... so check back next week sometime for improved pictures. but here ya go.

here is ethan with his ornament for 2006. it's a vintage red sled--not really appropriate for the 70+ degree weather we've been having, but it was red and vintagy, and the brown bear brown bear ornament was beyond my budget...

after this shot, ethan proceded to stick the ornament up his shirt and then pull off the top of the ornament... at that point, i took the precious ball away, and a tantrum ensued. yes, i did get the tantrum on camera, but let's just enjoy the sweet side tonite. :)

hope you all have a merry christmas! we are traveling over the river and through the rain to brian's grandparents' tomorrow... so i'll be offline till next week (unless we can sneak over to his aunt's house). i will have plenty of fun pictures to share, but until then, sit back and remember last year's christmas with us here, here, and here...

and most of all, remember Why we have reason to celebrate...Why we have reason to live. Jesus Christ. may God be glorified in our celebrations this weekend.

cousin lovin...

apparently, karina has learned a thing or two from ethan over the last few months...

ethan says, "lemme show you how it's done!"

aww...

now that'll make a momma's day!
(even if i WAS the one who put the bib on her...)

stocking stuffers!

this was a good idea in my head...

not sure if caroline agrees with me on that one!

**no infants were harmed in the taking of these pictures... perhaps taken a bit off guard, but not harmed!

2006 ornaments

i love christmas ornaments... i love reminiscing as we hang them on the tree, thinking about when we received or bought each one. some are from our childhood, and some we've picked up on vacation...and some are just the result of a great after-christmas sale at target! (and i reminisce about the great deal i found! ha!) last year, i wrote about the tradition we've started of buying a family ornament for each year, as well as an ornament for each of our children. this year, brian's mom gave us our family ornament, a picture frame with 4 little mugs hanging from it... so cute! it's perfect to represent our family this year, since caroline's arrival makes 4! since we just took our christmas pictures today, this random family has been hanging on our tree for the last month- ha! but at least now i have a good picture to put in there for 2006. thanks, mama d!

caroline's first christmas ornament is a sweet silver bell from things remembered. originally, i had planned to buy her the same silver boot that we chose for ethan last year, but i figured that if i started this tradition of getting EXACTLY the same ornament for each of our children's first christmas, down the road at kid number whatever, things remembered would discontinue the silver boot, and i in my OCD-ness would not be able to handle that rift in our deep seeded tradition. so to save the stress on brian down the road when his wife goes bizerk over ornaments, we decided to go with a different one altogether... but we kept the pewter/silver looking tradition. :) on caroline's bell, we had "caroline 2006" and "first christmas" engraved on opposite sides. i think it has a sweet, girly touch to it. and she seems to like it. :)

i haven't taken any pictures yet of ethan with his ornament for this year. i'll try to do that soon and add pictures to this post.

our family christmas picture

merry christmas! as of yesterday, we had yet to take our family christmas pictures... and i knew how busy this week would be getting ready for christmas and all... so i was determined to get them taken TODAY. we got up on time for church (even a bit early) and had just a few minutes to snap some shots before bolting out the door. we have used the tripod and timer on our camera in the past for family pictures, but having an additional child in your lap poses an extra complication in this process! so the question was... who would push the button on the camera and have 9 seconds to look decent with child in tow for this picture? originally, i voted brian for this duty (since i gotta make sure my hair's in place and all...), but i wanted him to hold caroline and me to hold ethan to get the red & white all balanced out. and after one shot, we realized it takes at least a minute and an extra set of hands to get caroline's dress situated and her head propped up right on daddy's chest... so alas, ethan and i had the responsibility of snapping these pictures...and sitting down in a whirlwind! i really didn't think this would work, but thankfully, ethan was thoroughly entertained by the blinking light of the 10 second delay on the camera. he eagerly awaited every flash, and after each picture, he jumped up, ran over to the camera exclaiming "on! on!" i was pleasantly surprised at how they turned out--we even captured ethan without his thumb in his mouth! now that's success!! :)

caroline is one month old!

i cannot believe that our baby girl is already a month old! it seems like just yesterday i was blogging ad nauseum about her room and how i couldn't wait for her to get here... and now i can't imagine what life was like without her. we are blessed with another happy baby... she just sleeps and eats and makes all those baby squeaks that are so endearing. and every now and then, she flashes a big ole' smile like i captured below. she apparently likes the camera flash (which is a good thing, little girl!!) because she was smiling right AFTER i'd take a picture of her. so i finally figured out that i should just snap a shot real quick and then wait for her to smile to get a good picture...and it worked! now we'll just work on her smiling BEFORE i take the picture. :) happy birthday, baby girl.

beta blogger frustration...

well i haven't switched over to the new version of blogger yet... and i guess that's the reason i can't comment on anybody's blog who has the new version! argh! i have tried to comment on kristi's, carrie's, and alyssa's blogs with no success... i can't even comment under anonymous! i don't know what that's all about. if anybody has any suggestions other than me switching over, lemme know. i just haven't done it yet, and brian doesn't want me to yet for some technical reason that i forgot.

have a great weekend!

my little prunes

as i was posting those pictures of caroline in the tub, i really did catch a glimpse of ethan 16 months ago... so i thought i'd share these comparison shots (ethan's on the left). caroline is proving to have her own little look, not necessarily the spitting image of her brother, but they are definitely related.

caroline's first bath

as i said in the last post, caroline really loved her first bath! she was a little freaked out as we lowered her into the tummy tub, but within seconds, she was relaxed and even gave us a couple of smiles. if you're wondering what in the world a tummy tub is, click here for more info.

bathtime!

we gave caroline her first "real bath" last week in the tummy tub, and she loved it! just seeing her little expressions as she relaxed in the water brought back memories of bathing ethan when he was a baby... (see, another plus to having your kids close together... you can easily remember what the older one did when they were the baby's age because it wasn't very long ago! ha!) anyway, so i started digging through the thousands of pictures since ethan was a baby and found several of ethan's bath shots...

ethan also had his first "big boy bath" with no turtle tub this past week... but i quickly learned that we needed a mat on the bottom of the tub to keep ethan from sliding around (which i now have). here's some pictures from ethan's bath the other night. yes, i will post caroline's first bath pictures next. hang on. :)

one size fits...a really fat baby!

caroline received a snuggly blanket sleeper as a gift this past week (thank you, sheila!)...and i had hoped it would fit her through the winter. well, according to the tag, it will fit her a lot longer than that!! check out how many lbs. this sleeper will hold...somebody in carters' editing department needs to be fired.

my vbac story

i am really excited about this post... the fact that i am able to write what i am about to write is in itself a testimony of God's faithfulness. as i have shared on here in the past, i truly desired to avoid a c-section for caroline's delivery. my recovery after my surgery with ethan was a good one, praise God, so i must say that my "c-section experience" had no nightmares or problems attached to it... but i really didn't want to go there again for several reasons. 1- it's surgery. 2- i couldn't count on an easy recovery again. 3- this time, i had a toddler that would need picking up, chasing after, etc., and 6 weeks of not being able to do any of that would have been a challenge. 4- we would love a larger family, and i would love to not have x number of c-sections under my belt. 5- most of my friends had these normal labors with no complications... why couldn't i? (my competitiveness and need to feel included even spills over to childbirth! oh dear!!) SO from the day i found out i was pregnant, i began praying about and researching and contemplating a vbac (vaginal birth after cesaerean) vs. a c-section. some doctors are very leery of vbacs, and actually, you cannot have a vbac in some states. so i'm very thankful that the Lord provided my doctor, who was encouraging about a vbac from the get-go.

well, the big day came bright and early... it was so hard to fall asleep the night before, knowing that the next time i slept in my bed, caroline would be home! i woke up at 3:30 and showered before dragging my sweet husband out of bed. we arrived at the hospital right at 5 am, and i was taken back to labor and delivery. when the nurse checked me, i was dilated about 2 cm and was having some contractions but didn't know it. when the nurse got my heplock ready, my blood pressure hit the floor. i felt as if i were about to pass out at least 2 different times over the next half hour. they say this is common, but it did not make me think positively about how the rest of the day was going to go! the nurse had me wear an oxygen mask to help, and within the next hour, i was much better. my doctor came in around 6:45 and broke my water. i started feeling the contractions then, though they were still very light and not much trouble at all. they started the light pitocin drip around 8 am, and it did not take long for the contractions to get stronger and closer together (what i expected...). as the contractions intensified, i began to feel light headed again, and it only got worse. i did not want to revisit the nausea of my labor with ethan!!! at this point, i hadn't ruled out an epidural, but i was wanting to do as much as i could naturally. cindy (my sister-in-law kristie's mother-- pretty much a mom to me too) was there to help, and she was so great at reminding me to not tense up through the contractions... but boy these were nothing like i felt last time! i knew the pitocin was really kickin' in up a notch... i waited until the nurse checked me again because if i was going to get an epidural, i wanted to wait until i was at least at 4 or 5 cm... but at around 10 am, i was at 3 cm, and could not take the pain anymore. i was having such a hard time relaxing through the contractions, and i still had so far to go. i looked at cindy, probably with the look of "i'm giving up", and she said, "it's not a contest, em"... and that's all i needed to hear. bring on the drugs!

the epidural took no time at all to kick in, and needless to say, i was so much happier after that. my body was able to rest, and when the nurse checked me at 12:30, she exclaimed "i can't find your cervix!" i was worried for a minute, but she explained that that meant i was fully dilated! FULLY DILATED!!!!!!! i was so happy you'd thought i'd HAD the baby already! i had reached a point in labor that i had not reached last time! praise the Lord!! that was an answered prayer right there. so now i was excited. i couldn't believe i'd dilated so quickly, considering i never got past 8 cm after over 24 hours of labor with ethan. it had been less than 6 hours since my water had been broken!

caroline still needed to come down a little more before it was time to push, so we waited for the next hour or so for me to "labor down". my epidural was turned down a bit so that i would be able to feel more to push, and around 2 pm, they said i was ready to start pushing. another new thing for me here! another nursing tech (who was also a doula) came in to help. after practicing pushing (i'd never gotten this far with ethan, remember?), they said i was ready to start. it was very strange, though, because i could not really feel that i was pushing (even though the epidural had been turned down). i knew i was doing something, but i had no sensation of if i was pushing hard or not. after a little while, sometimes i could tell if i hadn't pushed as hard on one count of 10, but they would tell me to push harder, and i couldn't tell if i did actually push harder. my dr. came in and said i'd be pushing for a good 2 hours, so i was prepared to be WORN OUT when all this was over. after about an hour of pushing, the nurse noticed that i was bleeding more than usual, so she went to get the dr. they were worried that this was a sign of my uterus rupturing, which would have meant an immediate c-section, but the dr. said it was ok... so i kept pushing for a few more counts, and then caroline's heart rate started to indicate that she would not tolerate all of this much longer. my dr. said, "we're gonna get this baby out in 10 minutes or we're not", so of course i was determined to get this baby out!! he said he needed to either use the forceps or the vacuum to get her out, which i was not really crazy about, but it was definitely a better option than surgery. he worked on getting the forceps around her head for a good while, but he just couldn't get them both on (now we know why-- she had such a big head!)... so he used the vacuum for one contraction, and out she wriggled!

brian cut the cord, and then they laid a very messy but beautiful baby girl on my chest... she was finally here! as i laid in bed and watched the nurses clean and weigh caroline, my eyes welled up with tears of thanksgiving. thank You, Lord, for a safe delivery and healthy baby. thank You, Lord, for answering so many prayers. thank You, Lord, for your faithfulness.
