thankful

we spent a wonderful thanksgiving with family and friends! it was a relaxing day at brian's parents' house with his side of the family, along with my mom and our dear friends kim, james, and their son isaiah.

these two turkeys were supposed to be cutting the turkey, not sword fighting! ha!

IMG_6945
love these people!!!!

IMG_6972
yum. yum. yum. we may have had a little bit leftover...

IMG_6956
a beautiful ham on a beautiful table!

IMG_6964
it's beginning to look a lot like eggnog season!

IMG_6971
while most of us were comatose on the couch after stuffing our faces, the kids burned off some energy outside. love these fall girlies!!

IMG_6920
cornhole fun! the two first-born cousins may or may not have duked it out a little… look at those stares!!

it's not a holiday dinner at pappy's unless there's shooting involved.

IMG_6917
for the first time in forever, another sweet potato pie recipe was on the scene… you see, brian's grandmother's sweet potato pies were THE staple for the holidays. i started hearing about these pies pretty soon after brian and i began dating, and once i began joining his family for holidays, it was clear. the pies WERE the holiday. they were on a pedestal with spotlights, complete with a soundtrack of angels singing that played anytime you stood near (but not too close to) the pies. (i didn't dare tell grandmommy that i was a pumpkin pie girl.) when kristie became a part of our family, grandmommy passed the sweet potato pie torch on to her, and the tradition continues. so enter kim, who 1) is pretty much family and 2) says that she makes a mean sweet potato pie. there was only one thing to do:

IMG_7000
have a pie-to-pie match-up.

all the guys closed their eyes for the blind taste test… (though i'm just now noticing that brian looks like he's cheating!)

IMG_6985
the brothers were taking this very seriously…

IMG_6991
that's some DEEP concentration. a lot was on the line here.
(what is james doing?!? #ihopeipicktherightpie)

IMG_6998
well the verdict was… they were both great pies! everybody wins! no seriously, some of grandmommy's faithful pie lovers actually voted on kim's pie, and kim's husband voted on kristie's pie. so it really was a tie. we are way too nice to each other, i guess!

hallie says she will eat whatever pie you give her!

IMG_7008
these aunties love my girl!

IMG_7009
closeup on her cute lil' shirt! (bought it last year and remembered i had it the day before thanksgiving! whew, that was close!)

IMG_7006
after all the pie hoopla, nana taught the kids how to make turkeys out of oreos, marshmallows, candy corn, and whatever other treats she has hidden away in nana's secret sugar stash!

the kids' blood sugar levels weren't quite high enough yet, so they pulled out some m&ms for a little thanksgiving bingo!

love those boys! :)

pappy and his DD wardrobe! doesn't uncle si kinda look like he's gonna jump off the shirt!? 3D si… now that is frightening, jack!

IMG_7024
after a late night run with kim to toysrus for early black friday deals, we pigged out again on leftovers and then headed home. it was a fantastic day of family, fellowship, and giving thanks to our Father. we are so incredibly blessed to have the love of friends and family who live out the love of Christ in our lives. we are so incredibly blessed to be loved by Almighty God, who gave us The Greatest Gift of Love when we deserved death. all other blessings pale in comparison to the riches we have as children of God. we truly do have so very much to be thankful for on thanksgiving and every day!

caroline is 7: a pony painting party!

DSC_1031
we celebrated our bright eyed birthday girl's 7th birthday by combining two of her favorite things: art and horses! caroline could. not. wait for her pony painting party!

DSC_0677
our dining room was transformed into an art studio, where the party guests each had everything they needed to create a pony masterpiece! (including a pencil-drawn sketch for the girls to follow-- great idea from aunt kristie!)

a quick picture of caroline's friends and my friends! love these sweet ladies and their girls!

DSC_0721
amazing aunt kristie was a ton of help with the art part, which i appreciated so much more when i started coming down with a cold the day before the party! not that i would have been giving anyone step-by-step tips to paint anything that looks remotely like a horse anyway…

DSC_0726
the outline of the horse… lookin good so far!

DSC_0748
amelia saw the polka-dots on aunt kristie's painting, and she had a plan.

DSC_0741
after outlining their horses, the girls picked a background color and got to work filling in the canvas. love these smiles!

i tried to let my girls' work be their work as much as possible, but amelia's horse begged for some intervention at times. like it still wanted to be a horse and not a sea of purplish brownish redness blueness.

DSC_0777
the birthday girl kept focused on her project!

DSC_0772
the moms had fun giving the girls a hand…

while hallie was fully entertained on ms. heather's phone!

DSC_0781
it was finally time to start painting the horse!

amelia wasted no time finishing her horse! i love the abstract touch. :)

DSC_0821
these "sister cousins" just kill me. their paintings looked very very similar!

now we know why amelia was in such a hurry to finish painting! she had her eyes on some different paintbrushes. :)

painting the mane was a lot of fun for the girls!

DSC_0857
i must admit i kind of held my breath while caroline painted the eye, but she did a great job!

everybody loves glitter and polka-dots!

the party guests all put their personal touch on a little "C" canvas for the birthday girl.

and then the starving artists were ready for CAKE!

caroline was thrilled when we found these tie-dyed plates!  perfect for this art party! and i think the paintbrushes were a hit! (as if Rice Krispie treats needed more sugar-ha!)

DSC_0937
love this birthday girl!!

DSC_0943
what a blessing for two of caroline's great-grandmothers to be able to celebrate with us! i enjoy watching them visit.

DSC_0945
DSC_1015

time for gifts! caroline received her very first barbie from karina-- an artist barbie, of course!

DSC_0954
caroline's expressions crack me up!

DSC_0962
she is a little excited about this wad of cash!!! everyone knew we had an upcoming trip to disney, and this girl loves to shop at disney!

DSC_0970
DSC_0997

this is my favorite picture of the party!! if you look closely, you can see caroline's siblings caught working together to steal her money! and she has not a clue!

DSC_0975
nana took this horse-loving girl shopping earlier for her own pair of pink cowgirl boots, bling-bling belt, and hat. so nana topped off the get-up with this adorable cowgirl shirt!

DSC_0982
more horse fun!! (and speaking of horses, can you see her hilarious shirt? i could not resist buying it for my girly horse girl. it's as if she designed that shirt herself.

DSC_0988
caroline has caught the reading bug this year, which thrills this mama. gram gave her the box set of the american girl "caroline" books. she couldn't believe it!

DSC_0998
DSC_1001

we are so thankful for these sweet friends that came to help caroline celebrate her birthday! they all did a fantastic job on their paintings!!

DSC_1010
DSC_1017

so so thankful for aunt kristie's help! i seriously would have been a mess doing this without her!

DSC_1027
and i forgot to get a picture of amelia and caroline together with their paintings. :( all the paintbrush icing went to my head!

we had such a wonderful time celebrating our glittery, passionate, idea-filled birthday girl! we are so thankful to God for her!!

DSC_0921
fast forward two weeks and one disney trip later… and it was caroline's actual birthday! in keeping with tradition, we waited to give her our presents until november 14th, her birthday.

DSC_0017
waking up to a birthday muffin with your family singing to you has got to be pretty exciting, right!? :)

the two of us went shopping later, and she picked out her very own bible case!

her big birthday surprise was kind of a thorn in our flesh during our disney trip. caroline had been saving her $$ for the lego friends dolphin cruiser, and with her birthday $$, she was able to buy it when we went to disney. well… that was fantastic except for the fact that WE were giving her the dolphin cruiser--on her birthday AFTER our trip! i LOVE that she never once expressed any expectation that we would give her that for her birthday… but i also wish she hadn't been so set on buying it herself! as we approached the lego store at downtown disney, i was still wondering how we were going to convince her NOT to buy the oh-so-anticipated dolphin cruiser… but to our great relief, it was not in stock. so we just casually told caroline she could buy it when we got home. well, as she spent her money over the course of our days at disney, she started realizing that she would not have enough $$ for this boat, and she began stressing. we just wanted her to enjoy shopping at disney!!! brian almost told her she was getting it for her birthday, but we just kept reassuring her that she could save her $$ again and it would be ok. so imagine her surprise when she rips off the paper and finds the boat...
