march!

DSC_6424
i think i say this every single month, but i cannot believe march is almost over. someone today was talking about april, and in my head, i was thinking that's a few weeks away... then it hit me that april first is one week from today. yikes! i've got some actual catching up to do around the house, but i also want to catch up on here before easter! we have actually had a fun month around, though my blog has recently been nothing more than a disney-catch-up journal! here's a little peek at what we've been up to lately....

amelia is growing like a weed! she turned 14 months this week, and she is starting to take a couple of steps every now and then. i think it's been pretty accidental, but i figure she'll be walking before too much longer. she is eating anything we put in front of her! and whatever doesn't make it in her mouth winds up in her (fantastic, dishwasher safe) bib, which she'll check at some point to see what she missed. :) she's learning new words every week, and one of her favorite things to do right now is put her hand to her ear like she's on the phone and say, "hey, bye, dadadada!"

DSC_6441
we went on our first family camping trip earlier this month! our small group camped out together for a couple of days, and it was so much fun. i can't wait to share more about it soon! as you can see, our kids kinda sorta liked camping...

DSC_5736
the kids and i are wrapping up our first year with classical conversations. we have loved fellowshipping with this amazing group of encouraging families, and i can't wait to get ethan's kindergarten year rolling in the fall!

DSC_6173
cousin karina stayed with us last weekend while her mommy and daddy stole away for a little anniversary weekend. the girls practically lived in their dress-up clothes, and they enjoyed working together on this mug for brian's grandmother.

DSC_6190
since the girls were up by 6:30 on saturday morning (yikes!), i had plenty of time to whip up some mickey mouse pancakes! the kids were so surprised! :) hey, i can't let aunt kristie be the only fun aunt in our family. :)

DSC_6219
we've enjoyed the warmer temperatures these days, so this little girl has been so happy to get some time in her beloved swing! and she almost has enough hair to put up in a barrette! her hair is so fine that it practically slips right out of any barrette. i am so ready to put some bows in amelia's hair!!!!

DSC_6433
since it has been a little warmer lately, kristie and i thought it was time for our 2010 inaugural beach day last week! it was somewhat windy, so we thought the kids could just play in their clothes like last spring... surely the water would be too cold. we left all the bathing suits at home and headed to our favorite place in town! well.... we hadn't been there ten minutes before all three cousins were soaking wet up to their waists. oh well. :) kristie and i had some good chuckles watching them waddle all over the shore in their heavy-wet clothes!

DSC_5985
this little booger is definitely not the sleeping infant that i brought to the beach last summer! :) do i even need to tell you that she loved the sand!? i think she ate sand for lunch.

be back soon with more camping and beach pictures!

a trip down memory lane

i have some drafts of posts that i want to be working on. i've loaded the pictures, and i just haven't taken the time to sit down and finish them. tonite, i sorted my posts so that i could see only the drafts. and i found this from early february 2008. caroline was 14 months. she had just started walking and talking. (those were the days.) ethan was 2 1/2. oh his little voice melts my heart... i almost deleted this draft... but i just couldn't. so here ya go. :)

original post:

in this video, you will see caroline doing her version of the motions to "itsy bitsy spider"... i was then waiting for her to ask for "eeess" again, but i realized that brian was silently doing it beside me. oh well! after the little pause, you will hear ethan singing the song for her.

this was on that day when caroline wasn't feeling so hot, so she looks a little rough! but cute nonetheless. :) and please excuse the unsightly surroundings of our kitchen like the ugly green towel on the hutch turned on its side... we're still pluggin' with the remodel... but that's another post for another time.

and no, our kitchen is still not done. but the green towel is no longer in our kitchen and the hutch is no longer turned on its side. that's progress, right!?

i'm still writing posts in my head. i'd better get on here soon to publish them before they auto-erase!

the fun we've been having 'round here...

DSC_0118
i've got a lot of catching up to do on here... we have had a busy june so far, and we've been blessed to spend lots of time with friends and family. i remind myself often that every memory made does not have to appear on tenlittletoes... but oh, that is hard for me. :) the blog posts in my mind are backing up and spilling over... i've got lots of pictures just waiting on flickr. and most of them will probably just stay there. things are not slowing down....

tomorrow i turn thirty!

next week, i get to see my college girlfriends for our annual reunion but more importantly for christie's wedding!!! i will also be visiting with lots of family and my sweet friend rachel and her baby caroline. i cannot wait!

ethan's birthday is the next week.

july 4th is two days after that.

where has june gone!?

here's a little of what we've been up to...

september fun with caroline!

this little girl is doing and saying new and hilarious things every day. she is on the brink of being two years old, but shhh... don't tell her that. i suspect that caroline sees herself as a 3 year old equal to her brother. while she does love her bracelets, dishes, and babydolls, you will find her most often playing with cars that go "wast" (fast) and walking around in a construction hat, safety goggles, and "eees shoes" (ethan's shoes).

caroline's speech is pretty comical. it's actually getting a lot clearer these days, but i usually feel like i need to leave a translation guide with anyone that is watching her. "gram" is "wam", "covers" are "co-co", and "caroline" is..well... i can't even type it. kind of like "ngai-ngai". she's repeating "line line", but the "l" is not there. she is using a ton of words, and once you figure out what she's saying, it makes complete sense. it's just that in between step that counts! :) she is getting close to putting two words together, but for now, it's separate. emphatic. one-word statements. and you'd better be listening! you can often hear her declare "mess!" (usually announcing something she's done) and "trash!" if there is something to be thrown away. (i'm counting on caroline to be my right-hand-girl for cleaning before too long!!) she also says the SAME things for various routines we have or for recent experiences that she remembers... like everytime i change her diaper she says, "ninks!" (stinks). and natalie and joseph did sidewalk chalk on our front porch the other day, and evvvvvverytime we walk by their artwork, caroline reminds me, "nah-nah" (natalie). "draw". "jo-jo". "draw". yes, caroline, i remember. :)

one of caroline's favorite "mommy" things right now is "chubby". does anyone remember this silly little joke from our childhood? one day, it just came to mind as caroline was messing with my face, and wow, she laughed and laughed. i couldn't even remember the words, but as long as i squished my cheeks together, she was cracking up! she usually uses it as a bedtime stalling tactic, when i'm singing songs to her and she doesn't want me to stop. after the inevitable, "ok, it's time for bed", she puts her fat little hands on my cheeks, smiles, and says, "chu-chu?!" and we do our little chubby thing. she and i don't have very many "just us" things. usually i sing her the same songs that i have always sung to ethan, and usually he's right there in the mix of things. but "chubby" is really just between me and caroline, and while it's not really that endearing within itself, caroline just turns it into something special. i know that is terribly cheesy! oh, i am so pregnant!

caroline, like most two-ish year olds (and three and four!), is very into doing things herself. after she has put on her pants or shoes by herself, she will throw her hands up in the air and announce "diiiit!" (did it!) i have a hilarious video of her doing this with some too-small clothes she found in her closet, but she is naked otherwise, and that violates daddy's no-naked-child-pictures-on-the-blog rule. SO i will have to stage a clothed version of this and post it sometime. ok, so that probably means never. but if you're ever at my house, ask to see it. :)

the other day, ethan was wearing a soccer shirt, so caroline went on the hunt for her own soccer shirt! she came into the living room pleading for help... i looked up to see this...

yes, instead of helping her, i ran to get the camera. :) she was so stuck inside that shirt. after she got it on the right way, i realized that i actually needed to get her dressed so we could go to wal-mart. well, that sista was leaving brother's soccer shirt ON! i decided to not make this a battle, considering it was wal-mart. so i stuck a bow in her hair and put on ruffly little shorts and pink shoes. i think she passed as a girl. :) here's the "i am not taking off this shirt that matches my brother's" look...

one afternoon when i was picking up our room, caroline was playing on my bed. she wanted to stay up there while i made the bed, so i told her she had to be a pillow. she was so amused with this idea that she sat behind the pillows for a good long while. (at least long enough for me to get the camera again!) she had fun playing peek-a-boo from behind those pillows... but the minute nana knocked on the door, she got down from the bed in a flash! here's that cheesy cute grin from behind the pillows...

caroline's curls are getting out of control. once she is out in the humidity, they bounce up into a nearly perfect 'do, but at home, we like to call her "caro-lion". especially after i've brushed the tangles out! anytime we head out the door, i have to attack her with a spray bottle to scrunch up her curls. she's used to it now, but i did have to chase her down the hall to do her hair! i have also invested in detangler, which helps soften her hair overall. the humidity has been wonderful for her hair (don't we all wish we could say that?!?!?), so i am fearful of what the winter will bring. caroline's head may be one big fuzz ball!!!! but then again, the humidity never really takes a winter vacation down here, so maybe it won't be so bad for caroline's hair. i still can't believe i have a daughter with CURLS. my hair won't even hold curl from a curling iron for an hour!

we are blessed to be a part of a wonderful Bible study. the older kids take care of the younger ones while we fellowship and grow in the Word. there are many blessings associated with this group, but one great blessing is that my children are growing closer to the children of families that we highly, highly respect. these kids are so sweet to ethan and caroline. they greet them so cheerfully and include them in their playing. i'm sure "tolerate" is a good word to use at times!! haha. during our labor day cookout, the older girls let caroline join them in playing dress-up. look at how proud they were of their little doll! you can't see it very well, but her get-up includes a full length sequin gown! :) my kids love these kids!!

sometimes i will realize that it's been at least 15 or 20 minutes since i've heard anything out of caroline while she's playing. this usually means 1 of 2 things... she is either sitting in the middle of a pile of books in ethan's room, just reading away... or she is really into something she shouldn't be (like the toilet or something in my room). i hesitate to run to check on her during times like this because if she IS reading or playing happily, my presence usually ends her contentedness. so i often just take my chances and enjoy the peace. well, it was getting close to naptime one day, and it was one of those quiet lapses in her play. i peeked in her room to see what she was doing, and well, i guess it was naptime. the soundtrack in my mind started playing, "i come to the garden aloooone!"

since nana and daddy both have camera phones now, the kids are really into taking "pictures" of me with their play phones allll day doing whatever i'm doing. (i guess now i know how they feel! ha!) i hear "cheeeese!" and i flash a smile, and click. they're satisfied. ethan will even stop and say, "that's soooooo cute!" after the picture. so i try to pose every now and then. :) well, the paparazzi grew weary of their job after awhile and decided to settle down in my laundry basket. now it was my turn to grab the camera. as soon as i said "cheese!", their "camera phones" went right up!

but here's a keeper. now i need to teach them to put the laundry in the basket!

we are really enjoying caroline right now. i saw on someone's blog the other day how the "two's" should not be a time that we endure but a time that we embrace. that statement really encouraged and challenged me. there are so many days that i'm sure i have the attitude of simply enduring caroline's constant requests and unintellible whinings. i am convicted when she exclaims "yowwwww-d!" because i have raised my voice at her. i want to have enough patience to sit and read the same book 30 times to her like she asks. my prayer with caroline these days is that i would embrace her. embrace these almost two-year old days. (not embrace in the sense that i ignore her need for parental guidance and discipline... i hope i am making sense.) before we know it, she is going to be talking in sentences, and she will be a big sister. wow. and she'll say her name perfectly, and we'll wonder where the days went.

having a ball!

my friend, abbie, just moved away with her husband and two girls, and in the process of packing, she came across an inflatable barn that holds all those balls that we all know and love from our childhood... you know, the ones from chuck-e-cheese?? so she passed on this once-loved piece of entertainment to our children, and as soon as ethan saw what was in the box, he was good to go for the afternoon! it was BALLS! a WHOLE BOX! and let me tell you, it was one of those afternoons where i just needed him to be happy doing SOMETHING! after abbie left, ethan sat in the balls for at least an hour. and then he decided to empty the box, one ball at a time. i came back in the room during this process and just laughed at the sight of my ball-filled foyer. thankfully, he also thought filling the box back up was just as entertaining as emptying it!

as you can see, my children were very excited about this gift, even before they were aware of the barn! i did inflate the barn this week at kristie's house, but i haven't uploaded those pictures yet... so i'll have to share those another time. it's so cute... it has an inflatable chicken and horse that are just hilarious. thanks, abbie! it's a hit!

random fun around the house

though we've been busy around here, we've managed to have a little fun....

caroline has finally proved that she can play in the tub with ethan without sliding all over the place! doesn't daddy do some great bathtime hair-dos?

we do have some pink pjs for caroline, but when laundry piles up, i pull out the reserves... ethan's old bulldozer & firetruck pajamas! it was so funny to see her in ethan's old pjs...but i still had to put on the pink bib!
caroline loves to play on this "laugh & learn" chair! she has figured out how to climb up into it and stand up on it...which is something ethan just thought of a few months ago! ha!

both of the kids love to ride this horse that my dad & joy gave ethan last christmas. caroline just giggles and giggles when the clompity-clomp comes on.

ethan is always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it's assisting mommy in the kitchen or accompanying daddy with his latest project.

the kids love gram's ride-a-little-horsy! it's so fun to see our kids enjoy our parents. today at the grocery store, ethan apparently saw a house on a chip bag that reminded him of brian's parents' house, so for the next 10 minutes, i heard, "pappy's house! pappy's house!"... from a chip bag.

fun fun fun! and the fun just keeps going!

our cool little pool

at the recommendation of a friend of a friend, we bought ethan this great baby pool from walmart. it's pretty big, and it has a cute little slide built in. after 2 trips to pick it up (duh, it wouldn't fit in our van!), we finally made it home with the pool one night. my mom took ethan outside while she was watching the kids the next day... she said ethan stopped, looked at the empty pool in the backyard and said, "hmmm.....pool....right." such the contemplater!! mom said he then stopped from playing several times and just kept going back to the pool to stare in it! he was probably wondering where all the water was! since then, we've played in the pool several times, but he has YET to brave the daunting slide. he will roll his balls down it, but it might be next year before he goes down it himself. maybe when he's 12. he's doing well to just sit in the pool at this point!!! but as you can see, he loves playing basketball in it. oh well. at least he's staying cool while he's shooting hoops. ha.

caroline has yet to play in the pool (usually we go out during her nap since i only have so many hands!).... but she LOVES the swing! this picture makes me smile so big, even though it's actually a blurry one. caroline seems to enjoy any little adventure, so maybe she'll be down that slide before ethan! :)

counting my blessings...

in honor of mother's day, i thought i'd share some things that the kids have been doing recently. i'm guilty of usually waiting to blog until something absolutely hilarious or precious or horrific happens. and in my little head, i think i have to have a picture to go with every post. i know, i'm a tad OCD (and i wonder why ethan insists on the drawers being closed ALL THE WAY!!). anyway, i'll try to just share little moments from our little world more often. here's a few:

ethan is putting 3-5 words togther now, such as "daddy's white car go" and "ca-ine's bib fell down" (in speech therapy terms, i'd say his average MLU is 4.0)

he answers the question, "what's your name?" with "e-FINNNNNN!" (huge emphasis on the 2 yr old version of "than")

he is WAY into counting right now. for a while, everything was "3,4,5...TWO cars!" as of this week, here's how the counting goes...."2,3,4,5,8,10,several,14....FOURTEEN!" it's stinkin hilarious. where did he get "several"?

thanks to the leapfrog letter factory dvd (and nana & gram!), ethan knows 9 of his letters. he's constantly bringing me his magnadoodle, asking me to "draw A".

ethan now calls the balls their appropriate titles: soccer ball, baseball, and football... but the favorite at our house is "bakaba, bakaba, bakaba!" he says it so fast, and it makes me laugh every time!

i haven't forgotten caroline! she is our steam-rollin' baby these days, rolling all over the place! it keeps her entertained, that's for sure.

she's still working on sitting up, though she's almost got it. she tries to reach for a toy in front of her and ends up flat on her face! the boppy is our friend right now. :)

caroline's favorite laugh is this almost-frightening gasping noise that sounds as if she's lost her breath. i have to assure the grandmas that she's just fine as she does this noise at a very loud volume...over and over!!

caroline is responding to her name, which makes this speech-therapist mamma SOOOO happy!

i think i had more cute stories to tell, but my brain is tired... maybe i'll remember them in the morning. i am so thankful to be the mother of these precious children. may God get all the glory in every cute little story...

bathtime & smiletime!

ethan likes to "help" with caroline's bathtime... really, i think he just wants the soap...

caroline loves grabbing the toys hanging from karina's gym-thing that we've borrowed.... do ya think she's teething? watch out, little monkey!

i think ethan is just as entertained with the exersaucer as caroline is... i've said this before, but whoever invented that thing really deserves a big fat prize!

still more pics to come...
