brrrrr!

well... it's beginning to feel a bit like fall! we wonder if this cooler weather is actually here to stay, but since it's almost november, i'm guessing it will stick around. the cold weather immediately gets me in the holiday spirit. i bought my annual cinnamon broom at the grocery store yesterday... i remember my mom did that many years when i was growing up. so, ok, that's about the extent of the manifestation of my holiday spirit as of yet... but surely there will be more evidences soon. if i were still rooming with nichele in college, we'd already be listening to bing or nat sing, "oh by gosh by golly, it's time for mistletoe and holly!" just thought you'd enjoy some pictures of little mr. snuggle bug. he looks so cute all bundled up.

God is so good...

He knows just WHAT we need WHEN we need it! since ethan has been born, i have been amazed at the amount of clothing this child already owns. we have a whole dresser full... but now that the weather is getting cooler, i am realizing that most of his winter clothes are 6-9 months or older... not much warmth in the 3-6 month department. so, i was just telling my mom that i need to keep an eye out for long sleeve shirts that are on sale. (brian couldn't believe it when i uttered the words, "ethan needs more clothes.") :) so.. i went to mops today, and i was saying what i just told you to a friend of mine... and a fellow mops member overheard me. she said, "i have a bag full of clothes for you!" she was just going through her 1 yr. old's old clothes the other day and was trying to find a home for them. praise God! and even better, she offered to drop them off at my house today! i gladly scribbled down my address for her, and sure enough, she knocked on my door this afternoon with a big ole bag of clothes. my favorite outfits are a "hungry little caterpillar" outfit straight out of the eric carle book and a little sunday church outfit, complete with a velcro tie and suspenders!!! i can't wait for him to sport that at nichele's wedding this weekend. :) as she was leaving, heather said, "this is so God!" that made me smile so big. not only does she have a generous spirit and a servant's heart, she took no credit. she gave the glory to God, the only place it should go. so, thank you Lord, for letting heather hear my need, and heather, thank you so much for living out 1 corinthians 10:31: "whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." oh! ethan's awake! time for a fashion show! :)

i got the most wonderful phone call today...

...from a friend i haven't spoken with in years and years. (i know, i'm only 26, so have i even been alive for "years and years"?? probably not...ok, so just years...) anyway, when i was in high school, God blessed me with a unique friendship... she worked with my dad, and she needed a babysitter for her family's kids during thanksgiving. i don't really remember anything about the babysitting, but i found a friend in lori. she was a joyful Christian wife, loving and completely enthusiastic. i remember going over to her house like it was yesterday- she and her husband were so in love, and i couldn't wait to find that one day. (thanks, God!) we would make those oatmeal chocolate peanut butter cookies that have to cool on the wax paper... oh how tempting those are just sitting there! i don't think we ever left too many for later. i would stay with her when her husband was out of town because she didn't want to sleep at home by herself- i followed in her footsteps this summer when brian went on travel! (thanks, bennetts, for babysitting ME!) :) like a good friend, she even attempted to set me up with her brother-in-law at one point. lori knew that this high school kid would love to make some extra money, and she hated cleaning her house, so she paid me to do it. i'd go over there, and she'd visit with me while i cleaned. :) looking back, i wonder why in the world i ever thought i could clean somebody's house when i couldn't even clean my own room! ha! i'd never windexed the mirrors with newspaper before, but that's how lori liked it done... so now, everytime i clean the mirrors with a paper towel, i think, "i should probably do this with newspaper". :) (are you laughing, lori??) she was due to have a baby my senior year of high school, and shortly after he was born, they moved away. i think we briefly kept in touch.. i remember writing to her my freshman year at harding, but i unfortunately didn't keep that up. gosh, that's a shame... after talking with her today, i can only imagine the times i could have used her encouragement over the last several years!

so... she called today. ethan was down for a nap, and i was in the middle of my list of projects that must get done before nichele's wedding this weekend (another post for another time).... i didn't recognize the number on caller ID, but the MINUTE she said, "emily, i don't know if you remember me..." i wanted to shout her name into the phone! of course i remembered her! we spent the next 30 minutes or so catching up, exchanging updates on our life. i told her how i did try to find her a couple of years ago when i dreamed that i ran into her in a store...she told me about how she did homemade speech therapy on her daughter and had her saying "her" and "were" in a week! (i'm impressed, by the way, lori!) :) i found out that she lives not too far from some friends and family that we usually visit once a year or so... how fun is this? is God good or what? her newborn baby that i remember is now almost NINE... and she pointed out that i am 2 years older than she was when she lived in my town... that is crazy. she seemed so mature and knew what she was doing... i feel so 14. :) she said i just grew from 17 to 26 in one phone call. :) we talked about our similar parenting styles and how we love the job God's given us of raising our children. i am so thankful that God has re-crossed our paths! He knows i could use another Godly mom to guide me in this parenting adventure!!! she emailed me pictures of her 3 kids while we were on the phone, and she went to my blog and said i look just the same. oh... and the best part??? she has a blog, too! SO, through the wonderful blessing of the world wide web, we can keep up with each other's happenings. oh, i'm just so excited. well, ethan's waking up, so i'd better go. thanks so much for calling, lori! i so look forward to keeping in touch this go around. :) and, if there's any other long lost friends out there who have somehow found my blog, please get in touch... and i promise to write a post about you, too. :)

oh deer!

pappy and his protege!

on a roll!

the big news of the week is... (drum roll!) ethan rolled over! yep! another developmental milestone checked off the list. :) he has been trying so hard for the last week or so... and then in the last few days, he has really been holding his head up during tummy time! yesterday, we went on a walk, and then i needed to put laundry in the dryer. i put him on his tummy and turned to go to the garage... then for some reason, i decided to stay with him a minute to see what he'd do... and within 10 seconds, he was on his back! he got the cutest look on his face, as if to say "woah! that was fun!" (yes... i know i'm always making up things he's thinking...but that's what a mom does.) :) i am SO GLAD i waited to do laundry, or i would have missed it! as soon as he rolled over, i called brian at work to tell him. i felt so bad that he missed it... but i'm sure it won't be the last time he does it. ha.. in two months, i'll probably be fighting this rolling as i try to change his diaper. it won't seem so cute then, probably. i have yet to capture his new skill on video, but it's only a matter of time, folks. this picture is during a rolling attempt. :) i'm gonna go put this little man on the floor to see if he can do it again... i guess i should make sure brian's in the room this time, huh? i hope i'm this excited about every little thing that our other children do...

OH- stay tuned for more pictures... you're gonna love these.
